Truly a landmark prog rock album
Release: 2001

This is the third album by my favourite band, Tool. Tool are unlike any band, and all their albums sound different from each other. Undertow was heavy, AEnima was mysterious and Lateralus is mysterious AND heavy. 10,000 Days is also a fantastic album, but my favourite is Lateralus by far. Let's begin.

The album opens with The Grudge. The bass plays a massive part in this track and can often be heard over Adam Jones's guitaring. The bass on this song is absolutely amazing. Justin Chancellor is a stellar example of a good bassist and shows that the bass is not limited to being a way of making the guitar riffs sound a bit thicker.
Track rating: 10/10

The second track is one minute long, and is called Eon Blue Apocalypse. There are no vocals or drums. Its classic Adam Jones, just jamming away. The track is somewhat soothing and serves as an opening for the next track.
Track rating: 7/10

The Patient is standard Tool length, seven minutes. Maynard James Keenan delivers his vocals extremely well as always, but I must say its not quite as epic as the rest of the album.
Track rating: 7/10

Track 4 is Mantra. This is just weird. It is one minute of low pitched, heavily distorted groaning. Apparently it is the sond of Maynard's cat being squeezed. That's just hilarious and earns it points.
Track rating: 5/10

I think everyone who has heard of Tool has heard of this song. Its on Guitar Hero World Tour. Its the epic that is Schism. This track rules. The timing constantly changes and mixes from being subtle to aggressive, and subtly aggressive. Brilliant.
Track rating: 9/10

Parabol/Parabola are the next two tracks that total up to ten minutes in length. Parabol is the opening. Its three minutes of really relaxing music. But don't relax for long, because when Parabola kicks in, you'll know about it. Parabola is beautifully heavy, but also has some softer parts. It is amazingly well written on all instruments.
Track rating: 10/10

Ticks and Leeches is the next track. Its very different for a Tool song. Maynard does a lot of screaming, but what is amazing is the drum opening. Danny Carey is a drum god, and this opening shows his never ending talent. Other that that, the song is okay, although I think the breakdown is a little too long.
Track rating: 8/10

Track 9 is Lateralus. This is without doubt the best song on the album. Hell, I think this is the best song ever. Its nine and a half minutes of pure wizardry. The riffs and solos are amazing. The vocals are built around the Fibonacci sequence and is very cleverly done. The bass is also very unique, and the drums are epic as always. I've listened to this song over 100 times and it hasn't grown old.
Track rating: 10/10

10,11 and 12 are Disposition, Reflection and Triad. They interlink with each other, creating a 20-minute masterpiece. Disposition is very calming, the guitar and bass blend perfectly to make a great sound. Disposition is 11 minutes long and features some amazing vocal work. But nothing can prepare you for the onslaught of an instrumental that is Triad. This is 6 minutes of pure guitar mastery. The riff, while slightly repetitive, is one of the best I've heard. Its a real headbanger of a riff. Classic Jones solos also play a big part in this song, and they rock! Overall, amazing.
Track rating: 10/10

Now there is silence, but there is one more track listed on the album cover. Two minutes later, the song starts. But its not really a song. Its a message. The track is called Faaip de Oiad (The Voice of God) and features a man talking on a radio show about aliens coming to invade us. He sounds like he's in a panic and the listener can't help but want to hear what he has to say. The story behind it is that it was all a joke, but the radio show mysteriously went off the air for 30 minutes after the phone-in. Spooky.
Track rating: 7/10

Overall: 10/10
This album is one of the best ever made. If you want to get into Tool, then this album is an absolute must.
